Taking a rectal temperature is a reliable method, especially for infants and young children, as it provides accurate readings of core body temperature. To begin, use a digital thermometer and ensure it is clean and sanitized. Apply a small amount of water-based lubricant to the thermometer’s tip for comfort. Lay the child on their back or stomach, holding them securely to prevent movement. Gently insert the thermometer into the rectum about 1/2 to 1 inch, ensuring not to force it. Hold it in place until the thermometer beeps, then carefully remove it and read the temperature on the display. Clean the thermometer thoroughly after use and record the reading for health monitoring.
How Do I Take a Rectal Temperature?
Taking a rectal temperature is the most accurate method for infants and young children. Don’t worry—it’s a simple and safe process.
Before You Begin:
- If your baby has recently had a bath, been under blankets, or been swaddled, wait 20–30 minutes before taking the temperature.
- Use a digital thermometer, as glass thermometers are not safe.
- Clean the tip of the thermometer with soap and water, then rinse.
- Apply a lubricant, like petroleum jelly, to the tip of the thermometer.
Positioning Your Child:
You can position your child in one of two ways:
- Belly-down: Lay your child face down across your lap or on a firm, flat surface, keeping your palm on their lower back.
- Face-up: Place your child on their back with their legs bent toward the chest. Use your hand to support the back of their thighs.
Taking the Temperature:
- Using your free hand, gently insert the lubricated thermometer into the anal opening about ½ inch to 1 inch (1.25 to 2.5 centimeters) until the tip is fully inside the rectum. Stop if you feel any resistance.
- Steady the thermometer between your second and third fingers while cupping your hand against your child’s bottom. Soothe your child and speak softly to keep them calm.
- Hold the thermometer in place until it signals (with beeps or another indication) that the reading is complete.
- Record the temperature shown on the screen, noting the time of day.
A temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher indicates a fever.
After Taking the Temperature:
- Clean the thermometer with soap and water.
- Label it for rectal use only to avoid using it for oral temperatures.
